Conversation with a Farmer Series - Melissa MaxwellOur first conversation was with Melissa Maxwell, of Barrett’s Mill Farm on March 23, 2019. Melissa has been growing organic vegetables commercially since 2004. After college she started her first farm job at the Community Farm of Ann Arbor and decided that farming was the career for her. She moved back to the East coast and spent 8 years honing her farming and management skills at Appleton Farms in Ipswich, MA, a 24-acre vegetable farm. As a co-owner of Barrett's Mill Farm she is now living her dream of owning a small farm business in a community that is enthusiastic about local agriculture. At Barrett’s Mill, she uses organic farming practices that are focused on regenerating soil fertility and restoring the land, while producing healthy, delicious vegetable, fruits and flowers. When Melissa is not in the fields she is swimming in the ocean or on a winter travel adventure.
Thank you Ricky Marshall of Marshall Farms - Opening Day SpeakerThanks to Ricky Marshall of Marshall Farm, and all who came to the Grand Re-opening event. We had a great discussion and learned a lot about farming. Ricky answered all our "burning" questions from how to take care of "critters" that may be coming in and eating up your garden (hint: cats and dogs!) as well as tips for keeping away aphids and thrips. We look forward to our next conversation with a farmer!
